Alternately poignant and raucous, angry and heartbreaking… McClelland's reporting is very much from-the-ground-up, far livelier than we will ever get from the average foreign correspondent. (Adam Hochschild).

Burma has more child soldiers than any other country in the world. It was the location of the CIA's first secret war, and it's a top supplier of heroin around the world. In 2010, Burma's military junta will hold its first governmental elections in twenty years.

This spring, Soft Skull Press will release Mac McClelland's engaging and thoroughly researched book, For Us Surrender Is Out of the Question: A Story from Burma's Never-Ending War (March 2010). A combination of journalism, popular history and personal narrative about the war in Burma between ethnic guerrillas and the Burmese junta, For Us offers a very different picture of the hidden crises in Burma. Arriving in Thailand in 2006 as a volunteer, McClelland found herself unexpectedly living with associates of a U.S.-designated terrorist organization battling Burma's dictatorship. She explores the world's longest running war through her housemates—heavy-drinking refugees who risk their lives documenting their government's secret ethnic-cleansing campaign.

McClelland is Mother Jones' new special correspondent for human rights. Her work has appeared in The Nation, GQ, South Africa, and Orion among other publications. She will sign copies of her book on sale at the event following her talk. This event is free and open to the public.
