CHOOSE A CASE STUDY
CONFLICT: Afghanistan
Conflict can be both a result and a cause of hunger. Communities struggling to survive are often prone to increased violence. In the wake of conflict, survivors find it much more difficult to grow food or earn money to feed their families. In Afghanistan, over 25 years of fighting have left it one of the world’s poorest countries.
GOVERNANCE: Indonesia
Where governments fail to operate responsibly and transparently, their people often struggle to keep hunger at bay and escape from the grips of poverty. Following decades of repressive rule, Indonesians are now reshaping their government and the way it interacts with the people - reforms that are helping the country better meet the needs of its poor.
LAND RIGHTS: Guatemala
Reliable access to land is essential to rural communities which rely on growing crops and raising livestock to survive. Where people lack the right to own and use land, their chances of breaking free from poverty are greatly diminished. In Guatemala, efforts to redress unequal land distribution are helping to better the lives of indigenous farmers.
