The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is a legally binding international agreement that acknowledges children's rights. The CRC works towards ensuring children's rights to basic necessities, as well as towards eradicating forms of child abuse, such as the exploitation of 200 million child laborers worldwide.
Signatories to the CRC commit to respect, protect and ensure children's rights, dignity and development. All UN members, except the United States and Somalia, have ratified the treaty.
The CRC recognizes that children have specific needs and rights. It acknowledges children as individuals that are part of families and communities, with fundamental rights that are based on their age and development level.
Countries that have signed on to the CRC have agreed to uphold children's rights such as the rights to life, survival, development, non-discrimination, health care, education, and protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation.
