Hunger is a political problem that can be solved.
Although the U.S. has been promising to play a lead role in ending global hunger for decades, current government efforts continue to have a limited impact.
Today's crisis levels of global food insecurity demand greater political will and policy changes from the U.S. government. We can and must act now to root out hunger within this generation.
Hunger is the number one human health problem in the world today, affecting more people than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Nearly 1 billion people go hungry every day, and over 2 billion are malnourished. More than 6 million children alone will die this year from malnutrition and hunger-related diseases.
Recently, the rising cost of food has forced poor families across the world to sell their limited assets or to go into debt just to put food on the table. Parents have had to forego meals to feed their own children. And over 100 million people who had been making slow, steady economic progress over the past decade may now be pushed back into poverty.
We have both the knowledge and the resources to roll back the current food crisis and to Root Out Hunger. If the U.S. steps up to the challenge of providing global leadership, we can meet the Millennium Development Goal of cutting world hunger in half by 2015, and pave the way towards ending hunger in our lifetime.
