Prices of staple foods like rice and wheat have risen dramatically during the first four months of the year — triggering what the UN calls "a silent tsunami" and driving more than 100 million people deeper into poverty.
You can help by encouraging Congress to pass legislation to aid vulnerable people who are affected by this crisis.
President Bush and many members of Congress are currently pushing for emergency legislation to provide a $1.2 billion increase in support of food aid and development programs.
Call the Congressional switchboard at 1-866-569-FOOD before May 14th and ask to be connected with your Congressional Representative (you don't need to know your representative's name, only your home address). Tell your member of Congress:
- You support the generous, life-saving assistance for food-related programs contained in the upcoming Supplemental Appropriations legislation.
- You support the development of a long-term strategy for US assistance that aims to make real progress towards eliminating hunger and poverty.
- You support the President's request to increase the amount of food aid provided through programs that purchase food locally, including the development of local farming markets and small scale farms in countries around the world.
Take action today to support those in need worldwide and help bring about an end to this global food crisis.
