In 2007 fighting broke out between an Islamist militant organization and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in Nahr al-Bared, a Palestinian refugee camp run by the United Nations in northern Lebanon. The Lebanese army declared victory after 105 days of intense fighting during which 400 people were killed. The humanitarian and economic toll of the fighting on camp residents was substantial. Mercy Corps in cooperation with Al Najdeh Association, a local aid organization, and the European Community Humanitarian Aid Office is implementing Cash for Work programs in the refugee camp to give people the opportunity to work and earn money to provide for their families.
