Blue Nile State is one of three contested areas between the north and the south of Sudan. Its diversity makes education – what is being taught to children and how it is being taught – a crucial issue. In response to citizens' desire for additional English-language opportunities for their children, Mercy Corps has helped to build a nursery as part of the larger Kurmuk Model School, one of the few centers in the region using English as the language of instruction.
